Yes. We have a universal language as well as a universal writing system; I don't understand why other worlds would do otherwise. Our way is much more efficient.

It's not really one of those things which can be chosen as such - at least, not on Earth. Many countries were isolated here when they first began developing, so it's no surprise that different languages developed along with them.

It's not as simple as that. The closest we've got is English, and that's only because of the Empire. Even then, it's not likely to happen. People aren't going to let their languages go without a fight.

They can still speak their old languages. Just have everyone learn the new one in addition.

Teaching billions of people to speak a new language would be no mean feat. I'm sure the idiot who invented Esperanto would agree with me.

Perhaps not, but it would be a difficult idea to spread. As I've said, someone already published a book about a new language that was intended to be universal, but it hasn't quite caught on.

They claimed that they wanted more space for their people to live, but it might as well be world domination and extermination of anyone who gets in their way by now.
