[Azula's sitting out on the hotel suite's balcony, enjoying the night air and looking contemplative]

[she's fingering a necklace-- a simple gold chain-- that some might recognize as one that she always wears under her clothing, and in her hand is a hand-held tape recorder]

[she presses the "play" button, and her own tinny-sounding voice comes out of the little speakers:]

"Okay... hi, little machine thing. ... Okay, that just sounded stupid. Is that enough, Azula?"

[Azula rewinds; she plays the recording a few more times before setting the device down and staring off into the night]

And yet you never give a thought to what I might not be telling you.

You might think I was better off when I could be called a "heartless swordsman" and like it, but you don't want to meet me like that.

You don't know what I've been through - but I know enough of what you have to know that it's more like yours than you think.

You never even saw me fight when I was a chimera. How do you know?

And on what basis have you decided I am - or that I was then? Emotional issues don't have a thing to do with being able to fight. I could have fought you to a standstill without even bothering to use magic.

Of course, then I was fireproof.

Right. Because kicking someone made of stone is going to be so effective.

Even stone is breakable.

And that would have required you to catch me.

You know I'm more than that!

Bender or not, Fire Lord or not, you're a normal human. You couldn't have touched me. Even if you caught me, I was still made of stone - and I've never heard of someone who could shatter a stone as thick as a human barehanded.

I'm not a normal human. I've trained for MY ENTIRE LIFE to not be a normal human!

Right. And training is going to make you able to stand up to someone whose body was built to be a weapon - on top of his own training?

I was made as a weapon, too.

... [Oh, look, that seems to have worked. Somewhat, anyway.]

When did I imply that being made to be a weapon was a good thing anywhere but in a fight?

... It's a good thing. It means I'm strong.

It means you're strong in a fight. Nothing else.

The people who turn us into weapons... see us as things to be used.

I was NEVER used! I'm a political weapon too, not just a mindless fighting machine. I was born to rule.

Never used? Really?

A weapon is a tool, Azula. The sword doesn't swing itself; there's always a hand holding it.

And trust me, it's really easy to tell when someone's been made into a tool, especially if you went through the same thing.

No one was holding me! I held myself!

Yeah, that's what I thought, too.
