It's mostly for morale. I lead another Pilot into combat, above me is the Major (who leads my squad and one of her own), and then the Colonel.

We'd probably be much lower rank in the US Marines, if they were still around.

Interesting. We certainly do have people who fight from ships, but we don't call them "marines".
