{LOCKED FROM RUFUS}

... Well. That canon unveiling was certainly interesting. I have some doubts about the idea of such a device's effectivity as a weapon, but on the whole, it is at least considerable.
Other than that... hm. I allowed a near-stranger to buy me ice cream as I pretended to be... enchanted by him, but it was all for a higher purpose- one that didn't end up working out, but that's another story for another time.

In unrelated news, someone has brought to my attention the existence of yet another information storehouse- this one apparently reserved for fictional writings about people from my world. The authors appear to write under pseudonyms- probably because they realize that, considering the nature of most of these works, they will be severely punished when caught.

All I'm going to say on the matter is that some people have very bizarre ideas of what I do with my free time.

... I don't like it when she ignores me. I see you are a practitioner of "schadenfreude" Obaa-san. This doesn't surprise me.

I figured as much- but really, I'd say you deserve it.

"Schadenfreude"? I'm not familiar with the term.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cold.

I didn't think you would be.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Schadenfreude. German for happiness at the misfortune of others.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"German"?

Hard as it may be for you to believe, I'm not a sadist.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Germany. A country in Europe.

Keep telling yourself that.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of it.

I take joy in my own pleasure. If that happens to come at another person's expense, then... well. But I tend not to go out of my way to cause others pain without personal gain- that would be just as pointless as giving others happiness with no personal gain.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
'Course not.

That's the principle of schadenfreude right there.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
But sadism indicates that one goes out of their way to cause pain- that they simply enjoy seeing someone hurting, regardless of what they themselves get out of it.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Schadenfreude isn't necessarily sadism, you know.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on what you said originally, I had assumed it was. Because I don't know the term, I can't make the judgement myself, you know.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You can take pleasure in someone else's pain without being the direct cause of said pain.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, you're missing the point.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I think you are.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Tsk. Let's just say that you broke your leg- or, if you want to use emotional pain as an example, say your little girlfriend broke up with you. Both of those events would cause you significant pain, correct? However, neither of those events would necessarily bring me joy. Perhaps the latter would bring a small bit of amusement, but that's beside the point.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be joy for it to be schadenfreude. Amusement works just fine too.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Fine, then. Apathy counts as well?

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-09-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
No. Pleasure at someone else's pain, not apathy.

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Pleasure and joy aren't exactly dissimilar.

Let's just say that I would only take pleasure from your broken leg if you had been working against me in some way, and your injury prevented you from continuing. Of course, that's just one example.
