It serves many purposes, especially in Spanish and other languages that use it over the letter n, but it's got a different name then.

What purposes does it serve?

It gives the letter a different sound and, therefore, makes it a different letter altogether in the alphabet.

What sound? Turn on the audio and say it out loud.

You have your normal n, and then with the symbol, it sounds like nyay.

Not really. The a in that would be strict, not loose. The y is necessary and was required in all of my Spanish studies to be on the end of it.
