Someone's just being a jerk. He cares more about trying to force me out of a relationship with his family than he does about the family itself.

Kind of, I guess. He said he considered me a sister but I doubt he meant it.

I don't need to be his family, anyway; it doesn't matter. I told him as much so that we could avoid any problems, but apparently it didn't work.

Maybe she wasn't actually trying to kill you. When I was fourteen I set my friend's circus net on fire, but I didn't hate or even dislike her.
